Software Traceability using Latent Semantic Analysis and Relevance Feedback
Software traceability (ST), in its broadest sense, is the process of tracking changes in the document corpus which are created throughout the software development life-cycle. However, traditional ST approaches require a lot of human effort to identify and consistently record inter-dependencies among software artifacts. In this paper we present an approach that reveals traceability links automatically using the information retrieval (IR) techniques of Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) and Relevance Feedback and present a software tool to implement these ideas. We discuss in detail how software artifacts can be represented in a vector space model and how term extraction and weighting can be accomplished for UML artifacts, such as use-cases, interaction and state diagrams, as well as for source code and natural language text documents. We also explain how structural information which is always inherent in software artifacts can be preserved in the term extraction and weighting phase of creating traceable artifacts. Unlike other tools, we incorporate human knowledge through relevance feedback into the traceability link recovery process with the aim to improve the quality of traceability links. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of our tool-based approach and our proposals through a case study with a pilot software project and compare our results with those of a manual tracing process
Observation of trapped light within the radiation continuum
The ability to confine light is important both scientifically and technologically. Many light confinement methods exist, but they all achieve confinement with materials or systems that forbid outgoing waves. These systems can be implemented by metallic mirrors, by photonic band-gap materials, by highly disordered media (Anderson localization) and, for a subset of outgoing waves, by translational symmetry (total internal reflection) or by rotational or reflection symmetry. Exceptions to these examples exist only in theoretical proposals. Here we predict and show experimentally that light can be perfectly confined in a patterned dielectric slab, even though outgoing waves are allowed in the surrounding medium. Technically, this is an observation of an âembedded eigenvalueâânamely, a bound state in a continuum of radiation modesâthat is not due to symmetry incompatibility. Such a bound state can exist stably in a general class of geometries in which all of its radiation amplitudes vanish simultaneously as a result of destructive interference. This method to trap electromagnetic waves is also applicable to electronic and mechanical waves.United States. Army Research Office (Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies under contract no. Precision Measurement of the Mass of the h_c(1P1) State of Charmonium
A precision measurement of the mass of the h_c(1P1) state of charmonium has
been made using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events produced in e+e-
annihilation at CESR. The reaction used was psi(2S) -> pi0 h_c, pi0 -> gamma
gamma, h_c -> gamma eta_c, and the reaction products were detected in the
CLEO-c detector.
Data have been analyzed both for the inclusive reaction and for the exclusive
reactions in which eta_c decays are reconstructed in fifteen hadronic decay
channels. Consistent results are obtained in the two analyses. The averaged
results of the present measurements are M(h_c)=3525.28+-0.19 (stat)+-0.12(syst)
MeV, and B(psi(2S) -> pi0 h_c)xB(h_c -> gamma eta_c)= (4.19+-0.32+-0.45)x10^-4.
Using the 3PJ centroid mass, Delta M_hf(1P)= - M(h_c) =
+0.02+-0.19+-0.13 MeV.Comment: 9 pages, available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/,

Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of D_s^+ --> tau^+ nu_tau Decay
Using a sample of tagged D_s decays collected near the D^*_s D_s peak
production energy in e+e- collisions with the CLEO-c detector, we study the
leptonic decay D^+_s to tau^+ nu_tau via the decay channel tau^+ to e^+ nu_e
bar{nu}_tau. We measure B(D^+_s to tau^+ nu_tau) = (6.17 +- 0.71 +- 0.34) %,
where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Combining this
result with our measurements of D^+_s to mu^+ nu_mu and D^+_s to tau^+ nu_tau
(via tau^+ to pi^+ bar{nu}_tau), we determine f_{D_s} = (274 +- 10 +- 5) MeV.Comment: 9 pages, postscript also available through

J/psi and psi(2S) Radiative Transitions to eta_c
Using 24.5 million psi(2S) decays collected with the CLEO-c detector at CESR
we present the most precise measurements of magnetic dipole transitions in the
charmonium system. We measure B(psi(2S)->gamma eta_c) =
(4.32+/-0.16+/-0.60)x10^-3, B(J/psi->gamma eta_c)/B(psi(2S)->gamma eta_c) =
4.59+/-0.23+/-0.64, and B(J/psi->gamma eta_c) = (1.98+/-0.09+/-0.30)%. We
observe a distortion in the eta_c line shape due to the photon-energy
dependence of the magnetic dipole transition rate. We find that measurements of
the eta_c mass are sensitive to the line shape, suggesting an explanation for
the discrepancy between measurements of the eta_c mass in radiative transitions
and other production mechanisms.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Emergent global patterns of ecosystem structure and function from a mechanistic general ecosystem model
Anthropogenic activities are causing widespread degradation of ecosystems worldwide, threatening the ecosystem services upon which all human life depends. Improved understanding of this degradation is urgently needed to improve avoidance and mitigation measures. One tool to assist these efforts is predictive models of ecosystem structure and function that are mechanistic: based on fundamental ecological principles. Here we present the first mechanistic General Ecosystem Model (GEM) of ecosystem structure and function that is both global and applies in all terrestrial and marine environments. Functional forms and parameter values were derived from the theoretical and empirical literature where possible. Simulations of the fate of all organisms with body masses between 10 ”g and 150,000 kg (a range of 14 orders of magnitude) across the globe led to emergent properties at individual (e.g., growth rate), community (e.g., biomass turnover rates), ecosystem (e.g., trophic pyramids), and macroecological scales (e.g., global patterns of trophic structure) that are in general agreement with current data and theory. These properties emerged from our encoding of the biology of, and interactions among, individual organisms without any direct constraints on the properties themselves. Our results indicate that ecologists have gathered sufficient information to begin to build realistic, global, and mechanistic models of ecosystems, capable of predicting a diverse range of ecosystem properties and their response to human pressures
The cardiac troponin C mutation Leu29Gln found in a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy does not alter contractile parameters in skinned murine myocardium
The present study investigates the effects of the first mutation of troponin C (hcTnCL29Q) found in a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) on forceâpCa relations and the interplay with phosphorylation of sarcomeric PKA substrates. In triton-skinned murine cardiac fibers, the endogenous mcTnC was extracted and the fibers were subsequently reconstituted with recombinant wild-type and mutant hcTnC. ForceâpCa relations of preparations containing hcTnCL29Q or hcTnCWT were similar. Incubation of fibers reconstituted with the recombinant proteins with phosphatase to dephosphorylate sarcomeric PKA substrates induced an increase in Ca2+ sensitivity, slightly more pronounced (0.04Â pCa units) in hcTnCL29Q-containing fibers. Incubation of the dephosphorylated fibers with PKA induced significant rightward shifts of forceâpCa relations of similar magnitude with both, hcTnCL29Q and hcTnCWT. No significant effects of hcTnCL29Q on the velocity of unloaded shortening were observed. In conclusion, no major differences in contractile parameters of preparations containing hcTnCL29Q compared to hcTnCWT were observed. Therefore, it appears unlikely that hcTnCL29Q induces the development of HCM by affecting the regulation of Ca2+-activated force and interference with PKA-mediated modulation of the Ca2+ sensitivity of contraction
A randomized, controlled, prospective trial to evaluate the haemostatic effect of Lyostypt versus Surgicel in arterial bypass anastomosis: "COBBANA" trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The development of suture hole bleeding at peripheral arterial bypass anastomoses using PTFE graft prostheses is a common problem in peripheral vascular surgery. Traditionally the problem is managed by compression with surgical swabs and reversal heparin or by using several haemostatic device (e.g. different forms of collagen, oxidized cellulose, gelatine sponge, ethylcyanoacrylate glue or fibrin) with various success. Preclinical data suggest that the haemostatic effect of collagen is stronger than that of oxidized cellulose, but no direct clinical comparison of their hemostatic performance has been published so far.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>This randomized, controlled, prospective trial evaluates the haemostatic effect of Lyostypt versus Surgicel in arterial bypass anastomosis. 28 patients undergoing an elective peripheral vascular reconstruction due to peripheral vascular disease will be included. Suture hole bleeding occurring at the arterial bypass anastomosis using a PTFE prostheses will be stopped by the application of Lyostypt and/or Surgicel. The proximal anastomoses will be randomized intraoperatively. The patients will be allocated into 4 different treatment groups. Group1 Lyostypt distal/Surgicel proximal; Group 2: Lyostypt proximal/Surgicel distal; Group 3: Surgicel distal and proximal; Group 4: Lyostypt distal and proximal. Primary endpoint of the study is time to haemostasis. Secondary endpoints are the number of intraoperatively used haemostatic devices, postoperative mortality within 30 days as well as the intraoperative efficacy rating of the two devices evaluated by the surgeon. As a safety secondary parameter, the local and general complication occurring till 30 ± 10 days postoperatively will also be analysed. After hospital discharge the investigator will examine the enrolled patients again at 30 days after surgery.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The COBBANA trial aims to assess, whether the haemostatic effect of Lyostypt is superior to Surgicel in suture hole bleedings of arterial bypass anastomoses.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00837954</p
Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in âsNN=5.02ââTeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (ÎÏ) and pseudorapidity (Îη) are measured in âsNN=5.02ââTeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1ââÎŒb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ÎŁETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Îη|<5) ânear-sideâ (ÎÏâŒ0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ÎŁETPb. A long-range âaway-sideâ (ÎÏâŒÏ) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ÎŁETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Îη and ÎÏ) and ÎŁETPb dependence. The resultant ÎÏ correlation is approximately symmetric about Ï/2, and is consistent with a dominant cosâĄ2ÎÏ modulation for all ÎŁETPb ranges and particle pT
